How can be a Barmer member in Germany?
Becoming a BARMER member involves a simple application process that can be completed online or via post.
1. Check Your Eligibility
Most people in Germany can join BARMER as it is a public (statutory) health insurance provider. This includes:
- Employees earning below the mandatory insurance threshold (€77,400 per year as of 2026).
- International Students enrolled at a state-recognized German university.
- Trainees or apprentices.
- Family members (spouses or children) can often be insured for free under a primary member’s policy.
2. Complete the Application
- Online Form: Use the BARMER Online Sign-up Tool to fill out your personal details (name, date of birth, and nationality).
- Documentation: You will need to provide proof of your status, such as a University Admission Letter or an Employment Contract.
- Previous Insurance: If you are already in the German public system, BARMER will handle the switching process and notify your previous insurer for you.
3. Receive Your Confirmation
- Processing: Membership confirmation is typically issued within one business day.
- Insurance Card: Your individual electronic health insurance card will be sent to your German address within a few days.
- Notifications: BARMER will automatically notify your employer or university of your new insurance status.
