About German Insights

Built by Someone Who’s Actually Been There

My name is Md Abdur Rahman Rifat, and I know what it feels like to land in Germany and realize that nobody prepared you for any of it.

I lived in Hagen, Germany, a real city, not the postcard version. Not Berlin’s tourist trails or Munich’s beer gardens. Hagen meant navigating the actual German system: the bureaucracy, the bank accounts, the pension letters you couldn’t quite read, the questions nobody on the internet had a straight answer to.

That’s why German Insights exists.

Why I Started This Site

When I was living in Germany, I spent hours searching for clear, honest, English-language information about how things actually work, not travel tips, not glossy relocation packages aimed at corporate expats. Just real answers to real questions.

Most of what I found was either outdated, vague, or written by people who’d never set foot in the country.

So I started writing what I wished had existed.

What You’ll Find Here

German Insights covers three things I know well:

  • Expat Finance, How the German pension system works, which banks are actually worth using, and how to navigate the financial side of living in Germany as a foreigner.
  • Cities & Places, Not just the top 10 landmarks. The kind of context that helps you understand a place before you arrive.
  • German Language & Culture, The phrases, concepts, and cultural quirks that don’t make it into phrasebooks but matter in everyday life.

Everything on this site is written from experience, researched carefully, and updated regularly. If something has changed, we change it too.

A Note on Trust

Germany is a country where the details matter. A wrong piece of advice about your pension contributions or your bank account can cost you real money or real time.

I don’t take that lightly. Every article on German Insights is based on firsthand experience, official sources, or both. Where there’s uncertainty, I say so. Where a professional (like a Steuerberater or Rechtsanwalt) is the right call, I’ll tell you that too.
