Germany Opportunity Card (Chancenkarte): Points System, Requirements and Application Guide

The Chancenkarte (Opportunity Card) was introduced by the German government to allow qualified non-EU nationals to enter Germany for up to one year to look for employment. Unlike traditional work visas, you do not need a job offer before applying.

How the Chancenkarte Works

The Opportunity Card operates on a points-based system. To qualify, you must either automatically meet the baseline criteria through a fully recognized foreign degree or earn at least 6 points through the official evaluation criteria.

Baseline Requirements for All Applicants

Regardless of your points total, all applicants must satisfy these fundamental conditions:

  • Language Proficiency: Proof of basic German (A1 level) OR fluent English (B2 level).
  • Sufficient Financial Means: Proof that you can support yourself financially during your stay in Germany (typically via a blocked account or a formal declaration of commitment).

The Chancenkarte Points Breakdown

If your degree or vocational qualification is not fully recognized (or requires partial recognition), you must accumulate at least 6 points from the following categories:

1. Qualification & Degree Recognition (Up to 4 Points)

  • 4 Points: Full recognition of your foreign professional qualification or degree in Germany.
  • 3 Points: Five years of professional experience in your field within the last 7 years, plus 2 years of vocational training.
  • 2 Points: Two years of professional experience in your field within the last 5 years, plus 2 years of vocational training.

2. Language Skills (Up to 3 Points)

  • 3 Points: German language skills at level B2 or higher.
  • 2 Points: German language skills at level B1.
  • 1 Point: German language skills at level A2 OR fluent English skills at level C1.

3. Age & Special Demographics (Up to 2 Points)

  • 2 Points: Age 35 or younger at the time of application.
  • 1 Point: Age 36 to 40 at the time of application.

4. Ties to Germany & Shortage Occupations (Up to 2 Points)

  • 1 Point: Previous legal stay in Germany for at least 6 consecutive months within the last 5 years (tourist stays do not count).
  • 1 Point: Qualification in a designated “shortage occupation” (MINT/STEM fields, healthcare, IT).

Working While on a Chancenkarte

While holding a Chancenkarte, you are permitted to work in Germany under specific conditions:

  • Trial Employment (Probearbeit): You can work for up to two weeks per company as a trial run to secure a full-time contract.
  • Part-Time Work: You can work up to 20 hours per week in any job (e.g., hospitality, retail, consulting) to help cover your living expenses while hunting for a full-time position.

Required Documents Checklist

When applying at your local German embassy or foreign embassy service:

  1. Valid passport and completed visa application form.
  2. Degree certificates and proof of recognized vocational training (via Anabin or ZAB evaluation).
  3. Proof of financial resources (e.g., a Sperrkonto / Blocked Account holding at least €1,027 per month).
  4. Proof of recognized health insurance (such as expat health insurance).
  5. Proof of German or English language certificates (Goethe, TELC, IELTS, TOEFL).
