Studienkolleg Requirements: The Pathway to German Universities
If your high school diploma isn’t recognized in Germany, you must complete a 1-year Studienkolleg and pass the Feststellungsprüfung (FSP) to qualify for a Bachelor’s degree.
Germany’s tuition-free universities are incredibly popular, but getting direct admission right out of high school isn’t a guarantee. Because education systems vary globally, your home country’s diploma might not equal the German Abitur. If you find yourself in this gap, your next step is completing a one-year Studienkolleg.
Understanding the Bridge Year
A Studienkolleg is a one-year preparatory course in Germany designed specifically for international students whose high school leaving certificates do not qualify them for direct admission to a German university.
Think of it as a bridge year. During this time, you will take subject-specific classes (like math, physics, or economics) and intense German language courses to bring your academic level up to German university standards.
Before applying, check the Anabin database or use uni-assist to see if your high school diploma grants you “direct entry” or “indirect entry”. Only indirect entry requires a Studienkolleg.
What Do You Need to Apply?
To get accepted into a public Studienkolleg, you must meet two main requirements:
1. Educational Requirements
You must possess a high school leaving certificate from your home country that allows you to study at a university there.
2. Language Requirements
Studienkolleg classes are taught entirely in German. Therefore, you must prove a minimum German language proficiency before you can even apply.
- Minimum Requirement: Usually a B1 or B2 level certificate (Goethe-Zertifikat, telc, or ÖSD).
- English-Taught Programs: While a few private Studienkollegs offer English-taught preparation for English Bachelor’s degrees, public Studienkollegs are overwhelmingly taught in German.
Public Studienkollegs are free, making them highly competitive. To secure a spot, you must travel to Germany (on a student applicant visa) and pass a mandatory entrance exam consisting of a German test (C-Test format) and a Math test.
Choosing the Right Course Track
When applying to a Studienkolleg, you must choose a specialized track that aligns with the Bachelor’s degree you eventually want to study. You cannot study Medicine if you do a Business track!
The Final Hurdle: Passing the FSP
At the end of your two semesters at the Studienkolleg, you will take a final comprehensive exam known as the Feststellungsprüfung (FSP).
The FSP tests everything you learned over the year. Your final FSP grade is combined with the grades from your home country’s high school diploma to calculate your German equivalent grade.
With this FSP certificate, you can apply to any university in Germany (within your chosen track). Passing the FSP proves that you are academically and linguistically ready to succeed in the German higher education system.
