Marienbrücke (Queen Mary’s Bridge) Visit Guide

Marienbrücke

The Marienbrücke (Mary’s Bridge) is a free-to-access footbridge in Bavaria, Germany, famous for offering the best panoramic view of Neuschwanstein Castle. It is located in the village of Hohenschwangau and was originally commissioned by King Maximilian II in 1845.

As of late 2025, Marienbrücke is expected to be open to visitors. However, it’s crucial to note that the bridge can close unexpectedly due to adverse weather conditions, particularly during the winter months due to ice and snow. It is strongly recommended to check the official website of the Neuschwanstein Castle ticket center or inquire locally upon arrival for the most current and accurate accessibility status.

Getting to Marienbrücke

From Neuschwanstein Castle: A short uphill hike (~15–20 minutes).

Reaching the bridge starts with getting to the village of Hohenschwangau, located at the base of the Alps.

  • By Train: Traveling from Munich to Füssen is the most popular route and takes about two hours. Securing a regional “Bayern Ticket” provides unlimited travel for the day. Navigating this route is incredibly seamless when you already know how to buy a train ticket in Germany using the DB app, allowing you to easily track schedules and connections right from your phone. From Füssen station, hop on Bus 73 or 78 to Hohenschwangau.
  • By Car: If driving, there are four main parking lots in Hohenschwangau (P1-P4). Parking typically costs around €12 to €15 for the day. P4 is the most convenient if you plan to use the shuttle.

There are two primary ways to reach the bridge:

  • On Foot: A scenic, uphill walk of approximately 30-40 minutes from the village of Hohenschwangau will lead you to the bridge. The path is well-signposted but can be steep in sections, so comfortable walking shoes are recommended.
  • Shuttle Bus: For a quicker and less strenuous journey, a shuttle bus operates from the designated bus stop in Hohenschwangau, typically near the parking lots. The bus will drop you off a short walk from the bridge. Please be aware that the shuttle bus service is also subject to weather conditions and may not operate in icy or snowy weather.

Shuttle Bus Fares (subject to change)

  • Uphill: Approximately €3.00 per person
  • Downhill: Approximately €2.00 per person
  • Round Trip: Approximately €3.50 per person

Tickets are typically purchased directly from the bus driver.

Best Times to Visit

Early morning (before 9:00 a.m.) or late afternoon to avoid peak crowds.

To make the most of your visit and capture stunning photographs, consider the following:

  • For Fewer Crowds: The bridge is a very popular tourist spot and can get extremely crowded, especially during peak season. To avoid the largest crowds, plan your visit for early in the morning, shortly after it opens, or later in the afternoon as the day-trippers begin to depart.
  • For Photography: The lighting for photography is generally best during the “golden hours” – early in the morning as the sun rises or in the late afternoon as it begins to set. This soft, warm light will beautifully illuminate Neuschwanstein Castle.

Marienbrücke Open / Closed

The Marienbrücke (Queen Mary’s Bridge) is generally open year-round, but there are important caveats:

  • Free access — no ticket required.
  • Weather-dependent closures — in winter, the bridge often closes due to snow, ice, or strong winds.
  • Unannounced closures — even in warmer months, maintenance or safety concerns can lead to temporary shutdowns.
  • Check locally — the most reliable updates are posted at the Hohenschwangau Ticket Center official website before you hike up.

If you’re planning a visit soon, I recommend checking the official Neuschwanstein or Hohenschwangau site for the latest accessibility status.

Tips for Your Visit

  • Check the Weather: The weather in the Bavarian Alps can be unpredictable. Check the forecast before you go and be prepared for potential changes.
  • Wear Appropriate Footwear: Whether you choose to walk or take the bus, you will need to do some walking on potentially uneven terrain. Sturdy, comfortable shoes are essential.
  • Be Patient: Due to the bridge’s popularity, you may have to wait in line to get on, especially during peak times.
  • Safety First: The bridge is suspended over a gorge. Always be mindful of your surroundings and follow any posted safety guidelines.
  • Beyond the Bridge: For a different perspective, consider hiking a little further up the trail after crossing the bridge. This can offer an equally spectacular, and often less crowded, view of the castle.
