Core Documents — Required for Every Application

Valid passport
Must remain valid for the entire permit duration. Include visa and entry stamp.
Application form
Antrag auf Erteilung eines Aufenthaltstitels — completed and signed.
Biometric photo
Digital only since May 2025. Certified photographer transfer code or office terminal.
Proof of registration (Meldebescheinigung)
Certificate from your Anmeldung at the citizens’ office.
Proof of accommodation
Rental contract (Mietvertrag) + landlord confirmation (Wohnungsgeberbescheinigung).
Health insurance proof
Valid certificate of coverage. Statutory (GKV) seamlessly accepted; private must meet minimum standards.
Proof of financial means
Bank statements, payslips, blocked account, declaration of commitment — form varies by permit type.
Digital photo rule — strictly enforced since May 1, 2025

Paper passport photos are no longer accepted at any German immigration office. You must obtain a digital photo from a certified photographer (they provide a secure transfer code) or use the photo booth terminal at the Ausländerbehörde during your appointment. Plan extra time if using the terminal on-site.

Residing family member’s passport and residence permit
Family member’s income and accommodation proof
Proof of German language skills at A1 CEFR minimum

Important Administrative Notes

Timeline: 4–6 weeks
The eAT (elektronischer Aufenthaltstitel) is a chip card. Apply before your visa expires. Expect two appointments: biometric data & card collection.
Translations & certifications
Documents not in German (or sometimes English) must be translated by a sworn translator. Apostille or notarization depending on country.
Fees: €100–€110 for adults
Initial issuance typically €100–€110. Renewals cheaper, minors pay ~€50. Fees payable at appointment.
