General Practitioner for a routine check-up in Germany

Finding a general practitioner (GP or Hausarzt) for a routine check-up in Germany is straightforward even if you are not a BARMER member. Public insurance typically covers these preventive screenings for free at specific age intervals.

How to Find an English-Speaking GP

  • Doctolib: The most widely used tool to book appointments online. Filter by “General Practitioner” and select “English” under the language filter.
  • TK-DoctorGuide: A free tool by Techniker Krankenkasse (TK) available to the public. It allows you to search for doctors specifically by the languages they speak.
  • 116117.de: The official directory of the National Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians. You can search for local practices that accept public insurance (Kassenärzte).

Booking Your Routine Check-Up

When calling or booking online, ask for a “Gesundheits-Check-up”.

  • Ages 18–34: You are entitled to a one-time general check-up covered by public insurance.
  • Ages 35+: You are entitled to a comprehensive check-up every three years. This typically includes a physical exam, blood sugar and cholesterol tests, and a consultation on health risks.

What to Bring to Your Appointment

  • Health Insurance Card (eGK): Essential for the practice to bill your insurer directly.
  • Vaccination Record (Impfpass): To check if any boosters (like Tetanus or MMR) are needed.
  • Medication List: If you are currently taking any regular prescriptions.

Cost and Coverage

  • With Insurance: If you have any German public insurance (AOK, TK, DAK, etc.), the standard check-up is free.
  • Without Insurance: If you are paying out-of-pocket (e.g., as a tourist), a basic GP consultation typically costs between €30 and €60, though more extensive “full-body” diagnostic packages can be much higher.
